Pioneer in Audiology. Founder. Visionary.
“He redefined what it means to listen, not just with our ears, but with compassion, curiosity, and courage.”
A Legacy Rooted in Resilience
Born in Brooklyn, New York on March 25, 1934, Dr. Jack Katz defied expectations. After being told in high school he would never amount to anything due to his own auditory and visual processing difficulties, he turned that personal challenge into a lifelong mission.
Dr. Katz earned degrees from Brooklyn College and Syracuse University, eventually receiving his PhD in Audiology. His lived experience shaped the empathy and innovation that became his legacy.
Innovator and Architect of the Buffalo Model
Dr. Katz developed the Staggered Spondaic Word (SSW) Test while caring for his newborn son, and later created the Buffalo Model of Auditory Processing. Both are still widely used today.
As professor and department chair at the University at Buffalo, he influenced generations of clinicians. His Handbook of Clinical Audiology became a cornerstone in the field and continues to guide research and best practices.
A Global Voice for Auditory Processing
Whether teaching in Kansas City, researching in Turkey as a Fulbright Scholar, or serving patients in private practice after retirement, Jack never stopped listening or learning. His commitment extended far beyond the classroom.
He co-founded the International Guild of Auditory Processing Specialists (IGAPS), fostering a global community of clinicians united in advancing APD care.
A Family Man at Heart
Jack’s proudest role was that of husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He married the love of his life, Irma, in 1956, and together they raised two children, Mark and Miriam. His legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched personally and professionally.
In Gratitude
Inspired by Dr. Katz’s lifelong dedication to improving access to auditory processing care, we are proud to offer services that reflect the principles he championed. He taught us that communication barriers can be overcome with creativity, science, and compassion.
We honor him not just for what he did, but for who he was.
